Guayaquil, Ecuador · May 2026
Where I stayed · Suite con Balcón
An Airbnb apartment high above the river for two nights, with a balcony looking out over the water. A pretty nice one.
Part one · Cerro Santa Ana
444 numbered steps up the hill above Las Peñas, past bars, cafés and murals, to a lighthouse, a small chapel and old cannons looking out over the city and the river.
Every step is numbered, from 1 at the street
Cannons, flowers and a ship that never sails
The river on one side, the city and the hills on the other
Part two · The Malecón and downtown
La Panga, comida típica
Plaza de la Administración
Six bronze women around the plaza, each one a virtue the city claims as its own: generosity, strength, courage, leadership, freedom and solidarity. They are by the Guayaquil sculptor Edgar Cevallos and went up in 2017.
